The Chamber of commerce of Bastia and Haute-Corse joins ESI!

On 12 January 2017, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bastia and Haute-Corse joined the European Straits Initiative. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been a partner of the PASSAGE project since February 2016, alongside many ESI partners and its strategic partner on the Corsica Channel, the Chamber of Commerce of Maremma and Tirreno. Its entry into the network is a tangible example of the desire to strengthen the links established by the project.

The Territorial Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIT) of Bastia and Haute-Corse is responsible for representing the interests of commercial, industrial and service businesses. It is a public institution that also manages equipment to the benefit of such businesses. It is accountable to the county prefect who represents the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Crafts, Commerce and Tourism. It is part of the Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Corsica.

Created in 1843, the Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bastia and Haute-Corse is presided by Mr Jean DOMINICI since 3 November 2016.

Its general missions are to:

  • Support businesses: trade and tourism advisers provide mentoring for companies in Bastia and Haute-Corse within the Directorate of la Maison des Entreprises (DME, Direction de la Maison des Entreprises, an organisation set up to offer companies advice and information).
  • Help with setting up businesses: within the DME, the centre for business formalities processes the set-up, transfer and take-over of businesses in Haute-Corse.
  • Provide vocational training thanks to the Bastia Mediterranean School of Management and Commerce (EGC, École de Gestion et Commerce) and the Mediterranean Institute of Training (IMF, Institut Méditerranéen de Formation).
  • Manage large infrastructures: this is the most well-known aspect of its economic activity.  It manages two international airports (Bastia and Calvi), as well as the ports of Bastia and Ile-Rousse. These activities make up most of its turnover (more than 90%).

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bastia and Haute-Corse (CCI2B) is therefore the manager of the commercial ports of Bastia and Île-Rousse under a public service delegation concession contract.

The commercial port of Bastia falls within the jurisdiction of the authorities of Corsica, in accordance with the Act of 22 January 2002 on the transfer of competency and ownership of Bastia infrastructure, which delegated its management to CCI2B starting from 1 January 2006 for a period of fifteen years, i.e. until 31 December 2020.

The commercial port of Île-Rousse falls within the jurisdiction of the County Council of Haute-Corse in accordance with the Act of 22 July 1983 relating to the assignment of competencies between municipalities, counties, regions, and the State, which delegated its management to CCI2B starting from 1 January 2002 for a period of twenty-six years, i.e. until 31 December 2028.

As a concession holder, the CCI2B has the exclusive responsibility to ensure, for both port infrastructures, the carrying out, maintenance, renovation, operation, development and promotion of works, grounds, buildings, facilities, equipment, networks, and services necessary for the functioning of port platforms.

Passenger and freight transport is the main activity in the two commercial ports. Cruise services, although significantly growing in recent years, remains at a development stage.

The commercial port of Bastia enjoys a privileged geographical position, at the heart of the Mediterranean, in the Gulf of Genoa, opposite the Tuscan coast on the other side of the Corsica Channel. Its natural hinterland is spread out over two thirds of the island of Corsica. The port’s assets make it Corsica’s leading trading centre for both passengers and freight.
