Inputs from straits’ areas shared with Interact "Knowledge of the seas" network

In November 2017, PASSAGE project was able to present its contribution and recommendations to the Interact network “Knowledge of the seas” at the occasion of a seminar in Porto.

The “Knowledge of the seas” capitalisation network was created by Interact programme in 2007 to learn and promote knowledge of the seas in the world of cross-border cooperation. The network invited PASSAGE project (Public AuthoritieS Supporting low-cArbon Growth in European maritime border regions) to share the conclusions of its work and contribute to the reflection on post-2020 future of maritime cross-border cooperation.

The event of the network in Porto in November 2017 was the opportunity for PASSAGE project partners, through the voice of their lead partner Pas-de-Calais County Council, to share their thoughts on what really matters when it comes to cooperate across maritime borders. The European Week of Region and Cities workshop in Brussels and local event in Tallinn, organised by PASSAGE partners in September and October 2017, laid the ground for constructive conclusions. The results of the carbon study implemented in the framework of PASSAGE project are a good example of the benefit of cross-border cooperation when it comes to reduce carbon emissions on maritime borders. It demonstrate that cross-border maritime flows, in particular, have a significant impact in the carbon footprint of straits’ territories.

The results of the study will soon be available on PASSAGE website

Among others, PASSAGE partners highlighted the need to develop an approach to cooperation specific to maritime border regions, acknowledging that land and maritime regions do not share all the same issues. They also called for a cooperation on maritime borders not limited to maritime-related topics only, considering that many other topics are relevant at cross-border level in their straits.
