For recognition of the straits in the EU strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region

Published the 6 May 2014

The European Straits Initiative has responded to the European consultation on the Adriatic and Ionian macro-regional strategy on behalf of the partnership’s two straits (Messina and Otranto) which are located in the region.

A third of the Initiative’s 15 partners are effectively located in this area of the Mediterranean on the Straits of Messina (between Sicily – Messina Province – and the province of Reggio Calabria on the Italian mainland) and Otranto between the Italian province of Lecce and the Albanian regions of Fier and Vlora. Tourism, protection of the marine environment, infrastructure and maritime and land-based transport are the themes highlighted in this consultation. This consultation is the first real opportunity to influence a European macro-regional strategy for better recognition of the straits.

Indeed, the Adriatic and Ionian macro-regional strategy is the only one under development that could recognise the specificities of the straits. Representations to the European Commission were also made in this regard in 2013.
