Otrante strait

On 16 April 2014, a cross-border meeting was held in Lecce (Italy) at the Council Chamber of the Province of Lecce. The cooperation between Italy and Albania was examined and the study "Co-operative links between Albania and Apulia", both in Italian and in English language and realised by the University of Salento - Department of History, Society, Human Studies, and co-funded by NOSTRA (Network Of STRAits) project was presented. The study has achieved the ambitious goal of a survey of the current state of the EU projects between Italy and Albania and of the activities carried out by them.

The Meeting was attended by the Department of Mediterranium of Apulia Region, very interested by the analysis carried out by this study in view of future planning in the new European Operational Programme Italy-Albania 2014-2020. Institutional representatives of Region of Vlora, the Responsible of the Mediterranean Service of Apulia Region in Tirana, representatives of the Local Economic Development Agency (AULEDA) - Vlora Region, the University of Salento, the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese, Legambiente Puglia participated in the meeting.

The meeting also presented the conclusion of the Educational Tour, which took place from April 12 to April 16. The objective of the meeting was to share with Albanian partners the best practices of tourist use in Salento and the territorial structures of incentives and coordination. The aim is to create the conditions for a similar initiative by the Albanian partners who would contribute to mutual understanding of the state of the art on the two shores of the Adriatic and the Otranto Strait, and can create the conditions for a joint design.

The Educ - Tour began with the institutional meeting in Otranto and continued with visits to several Parks and Natural Areas involved in the project, including Punta Pizzo, Porto Cesareo, Portoselvaggio Arneo, with the assistance and the support of Legambiente - Comitato Regionale Pugliese a non-profit organization.

No doubt that the specificities of the Otranto Strait will be more and more outlined with such cooperation projects and studies.
